The first of these unique and monumental crosses began to be erected in the 8th century.
It is popular belief and legend that the typical design of the traditional Celtic Cross was authored by St. Patrick himself. The Christian cross was placed over the circle representing the pagan symbol of the life giving radiance of the sun. The idea of this representation is to show that Christ's Cross predominates over paganism but at the same time accepts pagans into his flock.
